Hirosaki Castle Snow Lantern Festival
This festival started in 1977. Snow lanterns are handmade by the residents in an attempt to reproduce the long and harsh northern winter in a fun way. Wrapped in a blanket of snow in the severe winter night, the castle tower and old pine trees look magical when lighted up, invoking a sense of nostalgia rich in poetic sentiment. Looking towards Mount Iwaki from the inner citadel, the areas around the lotus pond are wrapped in a fantasy of snow and lights by a line of about 300 mini snow huts lit with candles. When: Early February
