Come and see one of the most beautiful sceneries in Japan! Going on board is already an extraordinary experience! Matsushima is composed of more than 260 islands. It is a famous place from the numerous poems and paintings it has inspired since the Heian period. An increasing number of visitors are coming to this place also for the temples and the shrines, including the Zuigan-ji, built by Date Masamune, and the Godaido. The poems and books describing the beauty of famous spots of Matsushima have been read worldwide. One of the best-known poets who wrote about Matsushima is Matsuo Basho, who visited the place in 1689. The travel diary of Basho, The Narrow Road to the Interior, is being read by lots of people even today. The beautiful landscape dreamed by Basho can be seen here, in Matsushima.
