Esashi-Fujiwara Heritage Park

Esashi is the region when Kiyohira, the founder of the Oshu-Fujiwara clan, was born and lived until he moved to Hiraizumi. This is the place where he had the idea of building the peace city of Hiraizumi. Esashi in Oshu City is now the home of the Esashi-Fujiwara Heritage Park. Around 120 buildings of various sizes have been reproduced on a site of about 20 hectares, including residences of the Heian aristocracy, the Kyaranogosho residence built in the shinden-zukuri style, the Tsunekiyo Hall, a reproduction of a samurai hall, the Kiyohira Hall, and Seicho, a government building. In these buildings, lots of entertainment activities are offered to visitors, such as wearing old costumes and armors, archery experience, and playing the kai-awase game. Another highlight is the natural environment with flowers and plants that color the scenery in each season, such as cherry blossoms, azaleas hydrangea, water lilies, bush clovers, and autumn leaves. Just outside the site, visitors will find a large shop, a restaurant, and the Esashi Cultural Museum, where they can learn more about Buddhist art of the Heian period and the regional culture. The Esashi-Fujiwara Heritage Park, located close to Hiraizumi Cultural Heritage sites, is the theme park to visit to learn about the accomplishments of the Oshu-Fujiwara family and experience the ancient and medieval history and culture of the Tohoku region.
