Tsuruga Castle

The history of Tsuruga Castle started 630 years ago when Ashina Naomari built a residence called Higashikurokawa-yakata. The castle became famous during the Boshin Civil War when it stood up to one month of relentless attacks. However, the castle was taken and destroyed in 1874. It was reconstructed in 1965, and in 2001 other parts of the castle in addition to the keep, such as the Hoshiiyagura tower and Minami Hashiri Nagaya longhouse, were also rebuilt using techniques from the Edo period. The keep is used as a museum and allows visitors to discover the history of Aizu. In 2011, the roof tiles have been changed for red tiles to give the castle the same appearance as at the end of the Edo period. This is the only keep in Japan with red tiles. The Tsuruga Castle park covers an area of approx. 228,000 m2 and has been designated a national historic site.
